CaseStudy: Piling for Dawlish Sea Defences

The new sea defences at Dawlish help to protect the stretch of railway line, from Exeter St. David's to Plymouth, that was washed away during the winter storms of 2004.  During the winter of 2020/21 our Delmag RH34 worked with the team at BAM Nuttall Ltd to install the piling for the project.

The tidal location meant that the piling rig was located on the unique walking jack up barge, Wave Walker.   This enabled the piling operation to continue no matter what the state of the tide.  Due the tidal range the rig was positioned over the side of the barge in a special cantilever dolly designed by BAM Nuttall.

Despite the pandemic and the challenges that this brought to the project, the piling operation continued 24/7 for the duration of the work.  ABI’s own rig operators were used and a misting system was used to hygienically clean the cab and to wipe down all the common grab points.
